AG-Venture Exhibit

AG-Venture is an educational program designed to teach young people the importance of agriculture and "where the food comes from." Many young people think that their milk, eggs, and other food items originate in cartons sold in the grocery store. We are interested in teaching these children that the grocery store is only a part of the food process that brings the animal from the barnyard to the table.

This year the exhibit has been upgraded and is now being housed in the "AG-tivity Center" (formerly the Red Barn). This is a FREE, hands-on exhibit where young and old learn about the amazing process of how we get our everyday grocery items. There are several "hands-on" activities that this exhibit offers, which are listed below. Children are encouraged to come participate and then take their creations home with them!

  • Learn How To Make Butter
  • Germinate Radish Seeds
  • Make A "Plant Person"
  • Construct A Water Cycle Bracelet
  • Create A Life Cycle of the Pumpkin

I would like to tell you about a great opportunity that we are offering to adults, students, clubs, or organizations so that they can earn community service hours and, more importantly, the opportunity to be eligible for a scholarship from the Pensacola Interstate Fair. Each year we give $25,000 in scholarships to outstanding students in our area who have participated in our Fair in some way over the years. By participating in this program, your students will be eligible to apply for a scholarship because they will have participated in our Fair for the 2007 Season.

At this year’s Fair we will be offering, free of charge to the public, an “Ag-Venture”. We will have an “AG-tivity Center set up in our 40 x 60 barn on our Midway where children of all ages will be able to participate in hands-on activities such as making butter, germinating seeds and several other activities to help educate the public and bring a stronger awareness to Agriculture. The Florida Department of Agriculture has developed a program called “Florida Agriculture in the Classroom” which has been very successful and has been endorsed by the Florida Federation of Fairs. Many Fairs have had success in educating their Fairgoers and we are excited to have added our name to that list. We are excited about this experience that we offer our community and hope that you choose to be a part of it.

I am looking for service organizations, clubs, or groups of students that would be willing to sign up for a shift (or several) to work in our program. Admission will be paid for those participating. Participating students may come early or stay late to enjoy the Fair before or after their shift. I am looking for groups of 5-8 students with 1 to 2 adults for supervision. Student groups MUST have at least one adult with them in the booth at all times! Shifts are set up in 3-4 hour increments. You are welcome to sign up for as many shifts as you would like. Please see the attached form and return it to me by October 1st. Shifts will be assigned on a first come first served basis so be sure to return the form at your earliest convenience in order to receive the shift you prefer. Confirmation will be sent to you. If you don’t have a full group of 8 students, don’t let that stop you. I will work to pair you with others to make a full shift if necessary. If you just have a group of adults, that will work too. We would be happy to have anyone that is 8th grade or above to help us with our program.

If you have any further questions, please contact me at 944-4500. I look forward to working with you and your students at this year’s Fair.
